IFRC Psychosocial Centre
The IFRC Psychosocial Centre was established in 1993 and is a delegated function of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, hosted by Danish Red Cross, situated in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Its primary function as a Centre of Excellence is to develop strategically important knowledge and best practice which will inform future operations of the Federation and National Societies. The Centre was established to promote, guide and enhance psychosocial support initiatives carried out by Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies globally. Its mandate is to mainstream psychosocial support in all National Societies.
The centre provides a potentially flexible and creative structure to develop and disseminate expertise. School based interventions, before and after a disaster or in conflict settings, are often at core in psychosocial projects. The Centre holds out an extensive database on psychosocial support, accessible here and has recently published a Handbook on psychosocial interventions as well as a Training kit, consisting of a Participants book and Trainers book, all accessible here or in hard copy, by contacting the Centre: psychosocial.centre@ifrc.org
The IFRC Psychosocial Centre achieves its aims through 4 strategic objectives: 1. Operational and technical assistance to psychosocial programming, 2. Capacity building of National Societies and competence development of staff and volunteers, 3. Knowledge generation and knowledge management to ensure approaches based on evidence-based research, and 4. Advocacy and communications to increase awareness of psychosocial reactions to disaster and social disruption."
