European Development Days 2010: 6-7 December in Brussels
A chance to build bridges and to form links between development stakeholders
At every level, participants from the North and the South can take part, put forward their ideas, examine creative solutions and question responsibilities. The debates are in plenary sessions or in bilateral meetings, in workshops or in the framework of parallel events. Its gives the opportunity to make good use of the diversity of viewpoints and models operating in the world. Several hundred organisations are presenting their projects, their ideas and their visions for development cooperation. In addition, it confirms the role of the European Union, not only as a leading donor of development aid but also as a leader of international thinking about development cooperation.
Policy-making laboratory
The EDD is a policy forum which highlights recent developments and important initiatives in the key areas of development cooperation: peace, security, democracy, good governance, the economic crisis, international finance, free and fair trade, food security, resources, the media, human rights, culture
The three thematic topics in 2010:
- A new economic context as the crisis has an impact on development cooperation
- A new structure of the EU institutions after the Lisbon Treaty that entered into force in December 2009 and its biggest institution innovation under discussion which is the European External Action Service (EEAS)
- New people with the appointment of the European Commission in February 2010
The formats for discussions:
15 High Level Panels covering a wide range of issues related to development cooperation such as global heath policy, motor of development and a focus on the least developed countries. It gives participants an insight into the broader context of development cooperation. Each of the High Level Panels could be made public and used in future meetings such as the UN Conference on Least Developed Countries in Turkey in 2011 or the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio +20) in Brazil in 201.
20 seminars allowing people to have an interactive exchange of views in a smaller format.
