The Lisbon Treaty
The Treaty of Lisbon entered into force on 1 December 2009. It provides the EU with modern institutions and optimised working methods to tackle both efficiently and effectively today's challenges in today's world. In a rapidly changing world, Europeans look to the EU to address issues such as globalisation, climatic and demographic changes, security and energy. The Treaty of Lisbon reinforces democracy in the EU and its capacity to promote the interests of its citizens on a day-to-day basis. The Treaty at a glance

The RC/EU Office has drafted a note describing the implications of the Lisbon Treaty and the new Commission for the IFRC/EUNS in the field of the EU external relations, civil protection and humanitarian aid. It also identifies actions that the IFRC/EUNS, with the support of the RC/EU Office, should undertake as soon as possible, in order to ensure a proper and influential dialogue with the new EU institutional set-up. Its ultimate purpose is to ensure that the future developments of the EU external policy will not have a negative impact on the work of the RC/RC and on the victims of the natural and man-made disasters.
