The RC network
In the EU, the Red Cross network represents nearly one million and a half volunteers, employs 113,000 people and has over a thousand staff working internationally.

Although each National Society belongs to a different social, political and cultural system and performs different tasks, all share the same basic unifying principles of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

In the EU, the Red Cross is a major provider of social and emergency services and a partner in policy discussions pertaining to humanitarian issues both within and outside the EU.

This section of the RC/EU Office presents a profile of the EU National Societies: their structure, main activities and common interests within the EU context. It does not claim to be exhaustive. Realities, facts and figures change from day-to-day and we will update these profiles on a regular basis.

Our heart and our future: volunteers at the RC

Volunteering has been at the very heart of the Red Cross/Red Crescent since its inception in 1863. Today, as much as ever, volunteers are the backbone of all Red Cross/Red Crescent activities, helping National Societies run successful programmes and assisting millions of vulnerable people in need.

There are around 97 million members and volunteers in the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement worldwide, of whom an estimated 20 million people are volunteers. The dedication of volunteers not only reduces the cost of activities and enables National Societies to reach many more people for its money, but the spirit of volunteering is at the heart of our humanitarian imperative.

Volunteering in your own country

National Societies recruit volunteers to carry out tasks that directly or indirectly help vulnerable people. Each National Society has different volunteer programmes, and requires different skills to make these programmes effective.

To become a volunteer with the Red Cross/Red Crescent, you need to contact the nearest branch of the National Society in your country for details of the programmes that they run and their current needs for volunteers.

If you do not have an address for the nearest branch of your National Society, please look in the "RC Profiles" for EU National Societies or access the directory of the International Federation, where you will find contact details of each EU National Society. Otherwise, Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies should be listed in local telephone books.
